Florencio Passes Away

Geesteren, Netherlands – May 4, 2016 – The 17-year-old Westphalian stallion Florencio passed away Wednesday due to a heart attack while turned out in a paddock at the Nijhof stallion station in Geesteren, Netherlands.

Team Nijhof shared the news on Facebook, noting, “The stallion was topfit and in super shape and had just collected semen this morning.”

Florencio (Florestan I – Walessa, Weltmeyer), a popular breeding stallion, was a dominant winner of the Young Horse World Championship as a 5-year-old in 2004 and repeated his victory as a 6-year-old in 2005. His many successful offspring include winners of the Pavo Cup and numerous approved stallions.

Hans Peter Minderhoud of the Netherlands, who was the World Cup winner this year with Glock’s Flirt, partnered with Florencio for his world championship victories.

Frozen semen from Florencio will still be available to breeders.
