Team Germany Goes Into Lead After Opening Day of CDIO3* Nations Cup Competition

Wellington, Fla. – March 17, 2021 – Immediately following the pinning of the CDIO-U25 Nations Cup team event, small tour riders wearing their respective flags cantered down centerline in the FEI Prix St. Georges before the big tour athletes wrapped up competition for the day with the FEI Grand Prix. Out of the five nations represented, it was the German team who kicked off the week in winning fashion, leading the way with 223.333 points after the first day of Nations Cup competition. The battle for team gold will be a close one Thursday, March 18 as Team USA follows closely behind with an overall total of 222.37.

Christoph Koschel and Eaton Unitechno

In the Prix St. Georges, the German contingency dominated with the top three scoring small tour combinations representing the red, yellow and black flag. Frederic Wandres and Quizmaster, Hof Kasselmann’s 9-year-old Hanoverian stallion, topped the class with a 74.765%. Kevin Kohmann and Equitas LLC’s Five Star, an 11-year-old KWPN stallion, was right on Wandres’ heels with a score of 74.177%. Competition started getting quite close as the Grand Prix competitors tried to lay down their best performances for their countries. Contributing to Germany’s overall lead in the CDIO3* following the opening day of competition, Christoph Koschel and the 12-year-old KWPN gelding owned by Unitechno, Inc., Eaton Unitechno, earned a personal best score of 72.891%. Team USA’s Adrienne Lyle and Harmony’s Duval, Duval Partners LLC’s 13-year-old KWPN gelding, took home the highest individual score in the Grand Prix by earning a 73.935%. Team results will consist of the best three scores in the first test, FEI Prix St. Georges and FEI Grand Prix, and the three best scores in the second test, the FEI Intermediate 1 and FEI Grand Prix Special. The best total team score will receive the gold medal. The Nations Cup team scores are calculated by awarding a 1.5 percent bonus for each Grand Prix rider on a team, while small tour scores receive no bonus. Once all riders have received their scores and their perspective additional bonus, the lowest score is dropped. If the drop score is that of a Grand Prix rider, the bonus will also be dropped with their score. Bonus points, however, will not contribute to individual final competition and are only used to calculate team rankings.

The senior team competition will continue Thursday, March 18 with the FEI Intermediate I at 12:25 p.m. and FEI Grand Prix Special at 1:05 p.m. The total scores from each day will be added together to determine the final team standings after the second day of competition.
